On the Road with California’s Poet Laureate

This summer, California’s Poet Laureate Dana Gioia will visit communities across the northern part of our state for a series of poetry readings and conversations, and other special events.

Appointed by Governor Jerry Brown in December 2015, Dana Gioia serves as the state advocate for poetry and literature in libraries, classrooms and boardrooms across California. An award-winning poet, Gioia is the author of Can Poetry Matter?, which is credited for helping revive poetry’s role in American public life.  He is also the former Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts where he championed arts education. As state laureate, Gioia will work to inspire a new generation of writers and celebrate California’s great literary legacy.

Here’s a list of upcoming public events. Join us!

I was so pleased to meet Mr. Gioia at the Crossing Borders, Building Bridges presentation at the Marysville, CA campus of Yuba College on September 21, 2017. I found him relatable and real. We would love to have him with us again during a Flumes and Yuba College Literary Arts Club event.

    1. Hi Gloria: Not to worry! Dana appeared at events in Los Angeles and Riverside earlier this year, and will be coming back to Southern California in the fall. Events are in the works for San Bernardino, Kern, Imperial, Ventura, and Santa Barbara Counties as we type…

    2. Dear Gloria,

The listings on this new blog are only very recent events. I did six public events in LA and Riverside counties earlier this year. I am reading at Vroman’s in Pasadena on 9/20 and will have at least a dozen more Southland events in the next few months as well as hosting an all-day conference on the great California poet Robinson Jeffers at USC on 10/18.
